How to minimize the side effects of using social media

While we don't yet have conclusive evidence that social media use actually causes depression, we do have many warning signs that it could negatively impact our children. Using the media  to make sure it's positive and healthy, and pointing them to ways to change it if you feel it isn't. 

Also watch out for symptoms of depression. If you notice signs that your child might be depressed, take them seriously. Ask how your child is doing and don't hesitate to make an appointment with a mental health provider. What role does social media play  in depression?

Focus on balance: Make sure your kids  also participate in offline social interactions and make time for activities that help build identity online and build self-confidence

Disable notifications: App developers are becoming increasingly aggressive with notifications to trick users into interrupting everything they are doing to  constantly interact with their phones. difficult times or are under unusual Stress. The negative effects of social media can be greater when trust is low.

Teaching mindful use of social media: Encourage teens to be honest with themselves about how time they spend on social media makes them feel, and to detach from interactions that add stress to media to as a family Spending time together, including phone-free dinners and other activities. Kids can resist, but they will feel the benefits.

 Bedtime out: Enforce a ban on smartphones in the bedroom after a certain time and overnight. Use an old-fashioned alarm clock to wake yourself up.
